Instagram Reels ads are full screen vertical videos that Meta places between regular Reels. For a Gulf brand, the formula is simple: a 9:16 video at 1440 x 2560 pixels, the top 14 percent and bottom 35 percent kept clear of text, short Arabic captions, original or royalty free sound, and a few clearly different versions to test.
This guide covers Meta's official specs, safe zones, placements, partnership ads, sound and Arabic text, then a worked example, a checklist and common mistakes.
Why Instagram Reels Ads Matter in the Gulf
Instagram reaches a large share of people in all three of the Gulf's lead markets. DataReportal's Digital 2026 reports, based on Meta's advertising tools, give these late 2025 figures:
- Saudi Arabia: 18.2 million users, 52.4 percent of the population and 71.0 percent of adults.
- United Arab Emirates: 8.05 million users, 70.5 percent of the population and 85.5 percent of adults.
- Qatar: 1.70 million users, 54.3 percent of the population and 63.7 percent of adults.
DataReportal notes these are ad reach figures, which may not match active users. Still, for a fragrance, abaya or skincare brand, a large part of the audience is on Instagram.
What Are the Official Instagram Reels Ad Specs?
Meta's Ads Guide sets the Reels video ad at 9:16, 1440 x 2560 pixels, MP4 or MOV, up to 4 GB. The full list:
- Aspect ratio: 9:16, vertical full screen.
- Resolution: 1440 x 2560 pixels.
- File: MP4 or MOV, H.264 video, constant frame rate, progressive scan.
- Audio: AAC stereo, 128 kbps or higher.
- Length: 0 seconds to 15 minutes.
- Primary text: 44 characters recommended.
- Captions: optional, but recommended.
- Sound: optional, but strongly recommended.
The 15 minute ceiling is a limit, not a target. Viewers can skip at any moment, so a short cut that lands its point early is usually the first one to test.
Meta also says the file must not include licensed music, face or camera effects, GIFs or product references.
What Is the Instagram Reels Ad Safe Zone?
The safe zone is the part of the frame Instagram's interface does not cover. Meta asks you to leave at least 14 percent clear at the top, 35 percent at the bottom and 6 percent on each side.
On a 1440 x 2560 frame, that is roughly 358 pixels at the top, 896 at the bottom and 86 on each side. Meta explains that the profile icon, the call to action button and the device edges can cover anything placed there, especially on phones taller than 9:16.
Keep your product, on screen text and logo inside the safe zone. The bottom third is the area most often lost, so never put an offer line or key caption there.
Where Do Reels Ads Appear?
Reels ads appear between regular Reels as vertical full screen videos. Meta's guide says viewers can comment, like, save, share or skip them, just like organic Reels.
In Ads Manager you can pick the Reels placements yourself or let Meta's automatic placements spread one ad across several surfaces, which can include Facebook Reels. One strong 9:16 master with the safe zones respected travels well across these vertical placements. For the other big vertical channel, see our guide to Snapchat video ads in Saudi Arabia.
Should You Run Partnership Ads With Creators?
Partnership ads let a brand run content with a creator as an ad, with both accounts shown in the header. Meta's developer documentation says they use signals from both accounts for ranking and performance.
Instagram's creator page says partnership ads can be Reels, Stories, static posts or carousels. Three practical points:
- Permissions first. A creator can grant account level permission or approve a single post, for example with a partnership ad code. Without approval, the ad waits in a pending state.
- No licensed music. Content with licensed music cannot run as a partnership ad.
- Grid or no grid. If the creator posts first, the ad shows on their profile grid. If they send the content to the brand for Ads Manager, it does not.
A creator speaking in local dialect to their own followers often feels closer than a studio voice. Agree usage rights and clear disclosure before launch.
Sound On or Sound Off?
Plan for both. Meta marks sound as strongly recommended and captions as recommended, so the ideal ad works with sound up and still makes sense on mute.
Use original audio, a voice over or music from Meta's sound collection, never a licensed track. Then check the story reads without sound: product visible, key claim in a caption.
How to Place Arabic Captions in Reels Ads
Arabic reads right to left, so text needs extra care inside the safe zone:
- Keep lines short. Two short Arabic lines read better on a phone than one long one.
- Respect the right margin. Arabic lines start on the right, so the 6 percent side margin matters most there.
- Lift captions. Auto caption tools often sit low. Move Arabic captions above the bottom third.
- Check Latin words and numbers. Brand names in Latin script can flip order inside an Arabic line. Proofread the final export.
- One dialect per ad. Captions should match the voice over word for word.
A Worked Example: Oud Reels Ads From Riyadh
Say you sell oud and bakhoor online from Riyadh and want Reels ads for shoppers in Saudi Arabia and the UAE.
You build three 9:16 videos at 1440 x 2560. The first is a UGC testimonial: a woman lights bakhoor in her majlis and says in Saudi dialect why guests ask about the scent. The second is an ASMR cut: the burner, the crackle, the wood chips, captions only. The third is a partnership ad from a fragrance creator's own account, with your brand in the header.
Each shows the product in the first seconds and keeps the burner and captions in the middle of the frame. For opening ideas that suit scent, see our perfume video ad hooks. All three use original sound and run against one goal, purchases.
This is an illustration of a plan, not a real campaign or result.
Checklist Before You Launch
- 9:16 at 1440 x 2560, MP4 or MOV, H.264.
- Top 14 percent, bottom 35 percent and 6 percent per side clear of text and logos.
- Product visible in the opening seconds.
- Arabic captions short, above the bottom third, proofread on the export.
- Original audio, voice over or Meta's sound collection, no licensed music.
- Primary text around 44 characters.
- Partnership permissions approved.
- AI use clearly disclosed.
Common Mistakes With Instagram Reels Ads
- Reusing a 16:9 TV spot. Black bars and a tiny product waste the full screen.
- Text in the bottom third. The call to action button covers it.
- Licensed music. Meta does not allow it in Reels ads.
- Testing small tweaks. A new font color teaches little. Test different openings, people or ad styles.
- Hiding that an ad is AI. At Sawa Films a director oversees every version, and we always disclose when an ad is made with AI.
